The owners of the Danvers Butchery plan to open their new North St. Store next Tuesday, nearly two and half years after an arsonist burned down the popular meat market.
“We just want to get back to what we know how to do, running a business,” said owner Glen St. Cyr.
It’s been a long road from the charred wreck of his old business to the new market off North Street.
A serial arsonist who lived a short distance from the original Butchery on Donegal Lane was arrested and convicted of charges relating to the blaze.
After the fire, there was a lot of effort put into settling with the insurance company. St. Cyr also sought permission to build three homes at the site of the destroyed market. But the town shot down his plans. Eventually the land was sold to a developer.
At the same time, St. Cyr and his staff searched for a new home for the market. After investigating four sites, he found a 5-acre plot off North Street.
Now, after a year of construction St. Cyr can finally get back to what he knows best – selling meat.
The new market will offer many amenities not found before. It will include the roasts and vacuumed-sealed marinated meats that drew loyal customers. It will also include a fish counter, expanded bread and produce selections, beer and wine.
Much of the stock will come from local vendors. Martha’s Bread Basket will help supply the bakery. Murphy’s Fruit Market will supply the produce. And the Butchery will sell wine from nearby Alfalfa Farm.
The new store is also three times larger than the first. It had to be to justify the cost of buying the 5-acre parcel, said St. Cyr.
Norm Wilson, the chief financial officer, said he’s excited about the re-opening, though anxious. He’s spent the last few weeks working out the kinks in their system, everything from training new staff to making sure the registers work correctly.
Which is why Wilson and St. Cyr decided to open after Thanksgiving, which can be a hectic time.
“We know it’s been a long time coming, but that’s because we wanted to open right,” Wilson said.
